Ten Haaf Projects is pleased to announce “Playing with the light switch”, an exhibition by Jim Mooijekind (b. 1992). This is the artist’s second solo show in Ten Haaf Projects gallery, following “Dance of the Discontent” in 2017.

Jim Mooijekind’s work is figurative and features primary colours. It is influenced by feelings he finds hard to grasp. On one hand, his perspective on humanity’s self- destruction, and on the other, his vision that he should celebrate life despite it. These two opposites return throughout his work, which switches moods between joyful and troubled.

Jim Mooijekind communicates in a cartoonish visual language. Figures are set in absurd landscapes, in various situations, moving between an existential crisis and a celebration of life.
For this exhibition, Jim Mooijekind’s larger recent canvases are displayed. These so-called stroboscope paintings examine the constant shifting between juxtapositions in his work: Ying and Yang, black and white, light and darkness, happiness and misery. The contrast between the artworks results in a hypnotic rhythm, a rhythm we all dance to.

The artist likes to challenge the seriousness of the art world with humour and playfulness. A world that, just as much as the “real” world, he also finds absurd in its own way.
