“The Zulu Queen Stood as Jerusalem fell”

Ten Haaf Projects is pleased to announce the exhibition “The Zulu Queen Stood as Jerusalem fell”, a solo show by Scottish artist Andrew Gilbert.

The gallery will show Gilbert’s latest installation of life-size statues of four British soldiers carrying a throne with a Zulu Queen, all wearing traditional clothing from the Anglo Zulu war of 1879. In this war, the Zulus were defeated by the English in a decisive battle where the English gained control of what is today South Africa. Together with the installation we will show the accompanying drawings. Growing up in Scotland, Gilbert was drawn to British uniforms from an early age; even though Scotland was itself a country conquered and brought under British rule in the past.

Andrew Gilbert’s work is greatly influenced by colonialism and differences between cultures. In Gilbert’s world there is always a conflict between the oppressors and the oppressed, there is victory and defeat. Although Gilbert’s work is historically influenced (by the British Empire), inspiration also comes from today’s collision of cultures such as what is happening in The Middle East, and in some cities of Europe.

Andrew Gilbert was born in 1980 in Edinburgh. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh. Gilbert’s work has been shown in galleries and museums in Europe and is held in numerous private collections.
